A New Year at Country Kids: Supporting Children Through Change and Big Feelings

The start of a new year often brings fresh beginnings, but it can also bring change for young children. Holidays, travel, time away from routines, or returning after a break can all feel big — even when the change is positive.

At Country Kids, we recognise that the early weeks of the year are a time of transition. It is very normal for children to need extra time, reassurance, and support as they settle back into familiar rhythms.

When Change Feels Big

Young children experience the world through their emotions and bodies before they have the words to explain how they feel. You may notice your child taking longer to settle, needing extra comfort, or showing big feelings during this time. These responses are a natural part of adjustment and a way for children to communicate what they need.

How We Support Children

We take a gentle, intentional approach to the start of the year by:

  • maintaining predictable daily routines

  • prioritising strong, responsive relationships

  • allowing extra time for settling and reconnection

  • offering plenty of outdoor play and movement

Time in nature plays an important role in emotional regulation. Being outdoors helps children move, explore, and find calm in a way that feels natural and supportive.

Working Together With Families

Simple routines at home, calm and confident drop-offs, and plenty of rest can make a big difference during this transition. Every child settles in their own time, and there is no “right” pace.

At Country Kids, we value working in partnership with families to support each child’s wellbeing. As we begin the New Year together, our focus remains on creating a calm, nurturing environment where children feel safe, supported, and free to thrive.
